Frequently Asked Questions
A few answers to help you feel more informed, reassured, and ready to take the next step.
Is grief counselling right for me?
Grief counselling isn't only for recent bereavement. Grief can follow any significant loss or change, including bereavement, relationship breakdown, miscarriage or baby loss, fertility challenges, illness, caring responsibilities, estrangement, retirement, redundancy, trauma, or a loss of identity or purpose.
You don't have to be falling apart to seek support. If something has changed and you're finding it difficult to navigate, counselling can offer a space to pause, process what you're experiencing and feel heard.
Is counselling only for bereavement?
No. At The Grief Studio, I recognise that grief can exist wherever there has been loss. If it feels like a loss to you, it matters. You don't need to have experienced a death to seek grief support.
What happens during a grief counselling session?
There is no script and no pressure to talk about anything you're not ready for. Sessions are led by you and shaped around what you need. You might talk through your experience, explore how grief is affecting your everyday life, or simply have space to be heard.
Where appropriate, sessions may also draw on body awareness, nervous system education, gentle movement or practical strategies to support you with the physical and emotional impact of grief.
What if I don't know what to say?
That's completely okay. You don't need to prepare anything before a session. Many people arrive not knowing where to begin. We'll start wherever you are and gently work from there, at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number. Some people find a few sessions helpful during a particularly difficult period, while others choose longer-term support. We'll regularly review how things are feeling so you can decide what feels right for you.
Do you offer online counselling?
Yes. Online grief counselling is available throughout the UK, allowing you to access support from the comfort of your own home. If you're based in Cumbria, in-person sessions and group support may also be available.
Is everything confidential?
Yes. Everything you share is treated confidentially in line with professional ethical standards.
There are some exceptions where there is a serious concern about your safety or someone else's safety, or where disclosure is required by law. Confidentiality and its limits will always be explained clearly before you begin.
Do you support neurodivergent clients?
Yes. I recognise that everyone experiences and expresses grief differently.
Sessions can be adapted to suit your communication style, sensory needs, processing preferences and comfort. There is no expectation that you express or process your grief in a particular way.
I'm not sure which type of support I need. What should I do?
You don't have to know before you get in touch.
Whether you're considering 1:1 counselling, group support, or simply want to understand what's available, we're happy to talk things through with you and help you find the most appropriate place to start.
